Index pages fail

I'm not sure if this intentional design or user error, but posting anyway: When trying to access all /events, /articles, or /pages, etc, the root index fails. It 404s. Example of the index URLs: https://customdomain.com/events/ https://customdomain.com/articles/ Expected behavior: If you have any articles or events or pages created, a user would be able to access the full URL such as https://customdomain.com/events/halloween-parking-lot-event, but they could try to access /events/ to see every event listing. Should index pages happen automatically?
